The Rio de Janeiro chapter was established in November 2009 at IBMEC University under the leadership of Leonardo Correia, who then passed on the project to Bernardo Siqueira, the magazine’s first Editor-in-Chief. The Rio de Janeiro Globalist is Global21′s 9th chapter and the first one in Latin America.
The magazine, which publishes entirely in Portuguese, aims to publish quarterly and has scheduled to launch its next issue in January. The project started with International Relations students working at a junior business within the university called Panorama Consultoria Internacional. A junior business is a business that functions like a normal business but is run entirely by students.
The Rio de Janeiro Globalist’s mission is to provide a space where students in Brazil can voice their opinion on international relations in an informative and relevant way. The launch issue’s theme was “From Brazil to the World” and articles discussed the “CNN Effect”, the power of the monarchy in the 21st century and Brazil-EU economic relations. among other things. Articles were mostly written by students in the university, but they also had student contributors from other prestigious institutions in Rio de Janeiro as well as two editorials by senior professors at IBMEC University.
On August 13th, 2010, The Rio de Janeiro Globalist staff hosted a launch event at IBMEC University, located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The reception received about 100 people at one of the university’s auditoriums and hosted a talk on “Brazil in the 21st Century” by Brazilian diplomat and businessman, Marcos Troyjo. Mr. Troyjo also spoke at Yale University on October 15th in a forum hosted by Global21.
