In the summer of 2010, London published its first issue of The Globalist. The London chapter was launched in January 2010. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Smith, the London Globalist is Global21’s 8th chapter.
Smith declares the mission of the London Globalist “to offer students the possibility to engage with current international affairs as writers.” Smith views the London Globalist not only as a representative of Global21’s academic tradition, but also as “a projector for the multitude of student voices that make up the metropole that is London.” The London Globalist shares the dedication to international affairs journalism that is characteristic of Global21 chapters while applying its own London perspective.
Although the London Globalist is relatively new to Global21, it has the largest circulation of any chapter. The first edition featured interviews with Sir Howard Davies, Director of the London School of Economics, and Lord Stern, IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics. In spite of the chapter’s achievements, Smith recognizes some challenges in his first issue, such as “striking a balance between innovative, perhaps more unusual editorial content, and that which deals with the mainstream debates in international affairs.”
The London Globalist is the first of two British chapters. The second is the Oxonian Globalist, stationed at the University of Oxford. The University of London, of which the London School of Economics is part, is the largest university of the United Kingdom with a student population topping 120,000 and a further 45,000 students studying on the University’s External System. More than one in four students at the University of London are not British, in keeping with London’s diverse population. Londoners speak more than 300 languages.
