In August 2010, the University of South Australia published its first issue of The Globalist. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Emma Alschwager, a Journalism and International Studies student, the South Australia Globalist is Global21’s 11th chapter.
The theme of the first issue of the South Australian Globalist was “Our World: The Next 25 Years.” The design and theme were based on images from the movie “Back to the Future,” which was released 25 years ago this year, and article focused on the future of economic, political, and social issues.
The issue release was marked by a launch party, held on September 20, 2010, on the West Campus of the University of South Australia. Two guests, Dr. Phillip Clark of Oxford University and Ms. Jane Sloane, provided keynote speeches at the event. Clark is a research fellow at Oxford’s Center for Socio-legal Studies, and his research focuses on conflict and post-conflict issues in Africa, especially transitional justice, mass violence, and community-based recovery efforts. Sloane has held executive positions at World Vision, AusAID, and Marie Stopes International, an NGO that promotes women’s sexual and reproductive health. The launch event was open to the entire University of South Australia community.
The mission of the South Australia Globalist is to spark discussion about international affairs between students, faculty, and the greater community. According to Alschwager, the magazine seeks to “give readers thought-provoking and sometimes confronting articles to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of issues that will affect future generations.” As a member of the Global21 network, the South Australia Globalist also hopes to promote its writing to an international audience and gain exposure on the global stage.
The launch of the South Australia Globalist’s first issue was a promising start for the new chapter. While many writers and editors found juggling their studies and magazine responsibilities to be a challenge, Altschwager praised their efforts and the successful launch of the magazine. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with everyone’s dedication and passion for the chapter, as well as my team’s ongoing commitment to such a new and exciting opportunity for University of South Australia students,” she said.
The South Australia Globalist joins The Sydney Globalist as Australia’s second chapter. The University of South Australia, also known as UniSA, is a public university with four campuses in the city of Adelaide. With more than 32,000 undergraduate and graduate students, UniSA is South Australia’s largest university.
